Clean Green Smoothie

This smoothie was born out of my need to use some soon-to-expire ingredients from my refrigerator before traveling. I try not to waste food and I love getting my greens, so I used the last bits of spinach and romaine I had on-hand for my morning smoothie! (See below for some great health benefits.)

Clean Green Smoothie

Serves 2 (or 1 large)

Ingredients:
» 2 cups romaine lettuce, chopped
» 1 cup spinach, packed
» 1/2 cup pineapple
» 1 cup orange juice
» 1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds
» 1 tablespoon hemp seeds
» 1/2 teaspoon wheatgrass powder

Depending on the size of your blender container, you may need to incorporate the leafy greens in stages. Add all ingredients to blender except the romaine lettuce. Blend until the spinach is broken down, then add one cup of romaine at a time until you have a nice smooth texture.

This is a great light-weight smoothie, but you do get a good dose of protein from the added seeds as well as from the wheatgrass, which is energizing and also alkaline, helping the body to eliminate toxins. With 3 different greens, this smoothie is loaded with nutrients: Romaine is an excellent source of vitamin A and vitamin C, spinach is notable for its iron content, and wheatgrass contains every mineral that we know of, plus 17 amino acids, and is rich in chlorophyll, an important blood-builder. Wow! And to think, I was just cleaning out the fridge
